Pause menu

Pausing is where saves live. Open it with the pause pill, Menu + Options on a controller, Esc on a keyboard, or the Siri Remote's back button on Apple TV.

What's on it

  1. Header

Resume, a gear that opens Settings without leaving the game, the Link & trade button, and this session's play time next to the total.

  2. Quick slot

One card with a screenshot and Save / Load buttons. This is the same slot the HUD's Save and Load pills use, and what a controller's stick-click shortcuts target.

  3. Auto save

Written every time you leave the game — background, quit, window close. Read-only here; tapping a card in the library resumes from it.

  4. Recovery

Appears only after an iCloud sync conflict. The state that lost the conflict is kept here instead of being thrown away. See iCloud sync.

  5. Save slots

Seven numbered cards with screenshots and dates. An empty slot saves immediately. A full one asks: Load state, Overwrite save, or Delete save. Long-press for the same choices.

  6. Send feedback

A quiet link to the feedback form; it notes which console you're playing.

  7. Restart game and Quit

Restart game reboots the cartridge after a confirmation. Quit returns to the library after writing the battery save and an auto-state.

Save states versus in-game saves

A save state is a snapshot of the whole machine — perfect for parking mid-level. Your game's own save (the battery save) is still what it was designed to rely on. Both sync through iCloud; both survive deleting and re-importing the game. See Saves and save states.

On Apple TV

The pause menu is drawn larger for the couch and takes focus from the game while it's open. The Siri Remote's back button toggles it; a controller's Menu + Options chord does too.
